Tips For Preventing Doorstep Package Thefts

Are you tired of worrying about packages being stolen from your front doorstep? Here are some great tips for keeping packages that are delivered to you out of thieves’ hands.

Have packages shipped to you at work.

Very often packages are delivered during the daytime, when most people are at work. If you’re someone who typically works during the day, and you frequently miss package deliveries to your home, consider having things shipped to you at work if possible.

Have packages shipped to a neighbor.

Alternatively, if you can’t have things shipped to your workplace, or if your schedule is simply too unpredictable to realistically have things shipped there, consider asking a friend or neighbor if you can have things shipped to his or her home instead. The best people to ask are those with stable everyday schedules who often find themselves at home during your area’s regular delivery hours.

Track your package.

If you’d still like to have things shipped to your home, it can help to track your package closely using the tracking number you received in your email shipment notification. This can help you know when exactly to expect packages, allowing you to plan to be around when your package arrives. You can sometimes even sign up for email alerts that will tell you when your package is going to be delivered—and redirect a delivery to a different address when you know you aren’t going to be home.

Require a signature on deliveries.

Of course this option isn’t the most convenient, as it means that you could end up having to deal with missed package deliveries. On the plus side, however, you’ll never have to worry about packages being left unattended on your front porch.

Leave specific delivery instructions.

Sometimes you’re also given the opportunity to leave specific delivery instructions when you place an order online. This gives you an opportunity to include notes on where at your house to leave the package—at a more secure location than your front door, for example.

Install a security cam at your front door.

Having a security cam installed at your front door is one of the best ways that you can protect your home and family from unwanted intruders, and in this case, a security cam could help you track down a thief if a package is stolen from your front doorstep. Cameras that are visible from the area just outside your front door can serve as a deterrent for thieves, and for an added security measure, you can put up a sign that reads, “under surveillance.”
